Our marketing research has revealed a problem that IT managers are facing.

While UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) devices can protect their servers from power outage, most of them will not provide any notification to the managers to let them know the event has happened.

Furthermore, while some managers have incorporated a solution to send an alert for power outage, none has come up with a notification system for the event that the air conditioning system has stopped.

Such an event can escalate to the point where a server can overheat and become faulty.

It appears that such a problem is very common.

Most times, if no action takes place, it will result in a loss of a server PC or some of its components.

More important are the losses created by the downtime of the server.

Customers and employees are cut off from information, external and internal information flow is disrupted and business management is interrupted critically.

In most cases the only action required is to restart the air conditioning unit in time, after it has tripped.

Considering the:

  • cost of the equipment in a server room

  • the cost of losing information should a server or some of its components become faulty

  • the cost of losses by the downtime of a network while the server is inoperable

This solution is a must for IT managers!

The Solution:

Prophecy Devices designed a unique solution for IT server room protection.

Based on our Instant Alert 100 wireless alarm engine we have developed the IT server room protection system.

Our server protection solution includes 2 types of detection mechanisms which will cause an alert to be sent if an alarm condition is met.

First is our on-board detection for power outage (Independent to the UPS detection mechanism).

The second is a temperature sensor that can be set to a temperature level above which an alarm condition is met.

The on-board detectors will provide instant alert in the event the power has been cut OR if the temperature in the server room has risen above the pre-set level.

Additionally, we have developed an optional redundancy feature.

This feature is the AutoStarter 100 which will automatically turn a generator on in the event of a power outage.

In each event the IT manager/technician will receive an instant SMS notification with the unique text description of the cause of the alarm condition (be it power outage or high temperature in the server room).

The Instant Alert 100 wireless alarm engine enables the configuring of the alarm device so it can send notification when the events start and when they clear. It can also be configured to react only to some of these events if not all.

It can be configured to send SMS notification up to 2 configurable recipient numbers.

A technician and their manager can be notified at the same time. This allows the manager to monitor if the technician is doing his job and also provide 2 levels of reactions.

The IT Server Room Protection System Includes:

  • Instant Alert Device - Alarm controller (includes GSM modem and detection and control circuitry)

  • 12VDC power supply - Connected to the AC supply backed up by the UPS

  • AC power detector - Connecting the device and the AC power in the wall (not protected by UPS)

  • Temperature detector - Measure room temperature, triggers alarm above the maximum allowed level

  • GSM antenna - On-board swivel or external – depending on reception level

  • Instant Alert Config  - Software tool used to configure the device from a PC

  • 2 x Output relays - Used for the redundancy feature

How it Works:

The Instant Alert 100 is designed to work by itself without ANY interface to the existing server PC, or network.

This is emphasized in order to make it clear that it does not affect the existing server system in any way, only externally enhance it.

Initially the device needs to be configured with the following parameters:

  • PIN number  - The SIM card will require a PIN to enable it to register on the GSM network

  • Location - This parameter helps identify which server room has a problem (This is mainly important if you are using a few Instant Alert devices)

  • Recipient numbers - 2 possible numbers to send the SMS alert to

  • Alarm text - This text identify the type of event being alerted of

  • Alarm trigger - What input state constitute an alarm condition (High, Low, Toggle)

  • Alarm target - Which of the 2 recipient numbers (if not both) to use for each alarm condition

  • Credit Request Format - This is used if the SIM card is using Pre-paid credit (Credit report on each SMS) (Not needed for contract SIM cards)

These parameters can be configured by connecting the Controller device inside the box to the PC via RS232.

Once connected, you can launch the ‘Instant Alert Config – Server Protection’ software provided with the device.

The ‘Instant Alert Config – Server Protection’ software is used to access and configure each of the required parameters.

Once configured, the device can be disconnected from the PC and the parameters will be saved in the device’s non-volatile flash memory.

Alternatively, using the specialized script, configuration can be done using windows terminal software.

For remote configuration the same specialized script can be sent over SMS (to the device cell number).

In the event of a remote configuration via SMS, the device will return a confirmation SMS to the sender.

Sender authentication protection, if configured, prevents unauthorized people to send commands to the device.

The power detector plug must be connected to a 220AC wall outlet that is not protected by the UPS.

When the power fails, the device will detect it is no longer supplied.

The Instant Alert Device box, which contains the temperature detector, should be placed in a spot in the server room that reflects the average temperature in the room.

Once configured and activated, the device will continuously monitor its inputs until an alarm condition is met.

In the event of an alarm condition, the device will look up which of the recipient numbers are assigned to the relevant event and will send the pre-programmed SMS text message for that event to the assigned recipient numbers.

Benefits and Advantages:

  • Easy installation

  • Software aided setup process

  • Works wherever there is GSM service (supported by pre-paid or contract SIM cards)

  • Enjoy the GSM benefits (wireless, mobile, roaming)

  • Instant SMS alert message to up to 2 configurable numbers

  • Sender authentication protection

  • Power outage notification

  • High temperature notification

  • Remote configuration via SMS commands (sender authentication protection )

  • Exchangeable to have motion detector or fire/smoke detection instead of one or both of the onboard detectors

  • Redundancy feature to automatically response to power loss and start a generator (The AutoStarter 100)

  • Reduces reaction time to power outage

  • Easy handover of on duty responsibility of IT technician by remote SMS change of recipient number
