Prophecy Devices designed a unique solution for IT server room protection. Based on our Instant Alert 100 wireless alarm engine we have developed the IT server room protection system. This system however was designed to provide notification only. The need was raised to design a redundancy plan that will enable to take some reactive action.
We have developed an optional redundancy feature which is a separate product by itself. This feature is the AutoStarter 100 which will automatically turn a generator on in the event of a power outage. The AutoStarter 100 software is designed to trigger and monitor the startup procedure of the generator to ensure its safety and a successful operation. The AutoStarter 100 will provide an automated response to the situation that can lead to an uncontrolled shutdown if the UPS reaches its capacity to provide alternative power. Once the UPS has reached its limit the alternative power will shut down and the server PC will be turned off without properly shutting down its operation. Such an eventuality can cause a variety of problems from data loss to system files corruption and damage to hardware.
The automated operation is especially important in the event when the power outage happens outside working hours. A company reliant on access to information or online operations could be halted for a whole weekend if the IT managers are not aware of a power outage problem or cannot react to it.
The Solution
The AutoStarter 100 is a control box, which will detect a power outage and will control the automatic process of starting up a generator. Most importantly it will inform you by SMS of the event of a power outage and of the result of the generator startup. Successful or failed at least you will know if you need to physically intervene or the automated system has saved you the time it will take to attend to the situation.
Most UPS devices will only keep the server PC powered up for another 10 minutes after the loss of 220AC supply. Should you have a generator, which can provide 220AC instead of the mains supply, you still need to start it before the UPS has reached its limit and shut down.
The AutoStarter 100 will monitor the main supply, once detected the loss of power, it will initiate the power up procedure. It will simulate the turning of the generator’s activation key to ON. It will then simulate turning the key so the generator starter turns the generator’s motor on. It will cut off the starter once the generator starts to provide 220AC on its outlet or it timed out (to prevent damage to the starter). The process will go through a few attempts until it successfully started the Generator or not. In both cases an SMS will be sent to the nominated recipients so to let them know the status of the system.
The control box will switch the supply to the server room from the mains to the generator alternative supply automatically. Once the power comes back the control box will switch back to mains automatically. It will also provide protection against activation of the generator while the mains are active.
The AutoStarter 100 is configured with the same ‘Instant Alert Config – Server Protection’ software as the Instant Alert 100 device. Remote configuration via SMS allows you to change configuration parameters and to retrigger the generator startup procedure should it have failed in the previous attempt.
